Pilates and Fitness Trends 2009

Friday January 2, 2009
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has released its predictions for the fitness trends of 2009. Like last year, they say that Pilates will remain strong. And like last year, many of the other trends they mention relate very well to Pilates. You can see the list of 10 trends at the ACE website. Here I'll list a few of the highlights (along with some comments from me) that drew my Pilates biased attention:
  • Specialty Classes: Like Pilates, YAY!

  • Boomer Fitness: Boomer will do well to look toward methods like Pilates that can support so many different kinds of fitness needs.
    How to Modify Pilates Exercises
  • Pilates for Seniors

  • Getting Back to Basics: Like the strength without bulk, flexibility, and good body mechanics - some of the top benefits of Pilates.

  • Event or Sport Specific Exercise: Pilates is growing very fast in this realm. We saw this connection during the '08 Olympics, and DVDs and trainings like Pilates for golf, Pilates for skiing, and equestrian Pilates becoming very popular.

  • Mixing It Up: What they mean by this is mixing cardio and strength training on different days and at differing intensities. Pilates fits in here as your low intensity strength training segment.

  • Budget Friendly Workouts: Pilates classes might cost a little more than some workouts but you get a lot for your money. They are well worth it. You can also mix and match classes with home workouts in a way that is very wallet friendly. Read more in Pilates Can Be Affordable.
The list also includes kettlebells. I can't speak to that just yet, but I'm guessing that core strength is critical.

This is a great list for 2009. We can see that Pilates is still going strong. It has always been trendy, but we know that it is here to stay. People try it because it is popular and see the results. That is why they keep coming back to Pilates even in a time when money is scarce. Pilates is an excellent cross training tool that everyone can take advantage of. It is a full body workout that is hard but fun!
