Dr. Mehmet Oz who soared to fame as the medical guru for the Oprah show and has since gained his own show and authored several best selling health books is a big fan of Pilates. He has spoken and written about the benefits of Pilates many times over the years. Recently, in a short article about exercises to relieve lower back pain which was posted at DrOz.com, Dr. Oz once again cited Pilates as the exercise of choice.
Despite having seen Dr. Oz give a frightening demonstration of the Pilates hundreds a few years ago on the Oprah show (maybe he was just getting into it), he makes the right points about the benefits of Pilates for back pain. He talks about training the core muscles to support the spine, about Pilates emphasis on proper alignment and good form, and the Pilates principles. Dr. Oz goes on to suggest that a successful program of exercise for back pain would include Pilates props like fitness bands and exercise balls.
Tucked into the middle of his article Dr. Oz makes an interesting statement about Pilates and rehab. He says that 9 out of 10 rehab specialists prefer Pilates. I don't doubt that at all, but I do wonder where that stat came from. Does anyone know? Maybe I'll call Dr. Oz and ask him.
I believe that people with back pain are best served by working with a certified Pilates instructor, preferably one with a lot experience, and not by teaching themselves only.
