Sciatica is no fun at all. Sciatica is irritation of the sciatic nerve, a large nerve that provides most of the motor and sensory activity of for the lower part of the body. Sciatic nerve pain often shows up as pain running from the butt, down the back of the leg and into the foot. It's miserable and can wreck a lot of fitness plans.
I get a lot of questions about exercises for sciatica. Not an expert, I decided to call on Brent Anderson, a PhD, PT, OCS and the president of Polestar Pilates, a leader in Pilates and rehab training.
I put the questions we all want answered about exercise and sciatica to Dr. Anderson. We ended up with an easy to read interview where Dr. Anderson explains what the sciatic nerve is all about, the causes of sciatica, and how to exercise in a way the prevents sciatic irritation and helps remove sciatic stressors.
