A reader wrote to me recently wondering if she would still get the benefits of Pilates if she couldn't do the advanced exercises. What a great question. After all, the traditional Pilates mat sequence has a lot of advanced exercises in it and one might easily wonder what one is missing by not doing them, and what to do instead.
My shortest answer is that exercises that challenge you personally, whatever level of strength and flexibility you have, are advanced for you. As long as you are doing a balanced workout of exercises right for your level, you will enjoy great benefits. But of course, I almost never keep things that minimal.
