You Can Be a Pilates Greenie

earth heartNews flash: We are the earth and our health is completely dependent on the health of our environment. There is no way to have wellness without attending to the purity and vitality of air we breathe, the soil our foods are grown in, the water we drink, or any of the myriad of symbiotic systems that interpenetrate our lives on this planet.  Which is why, as we celebrate Earth Day (April 22) this weekend, I thought it would be good for those of us in Pilates to take a look at how "green" we can be.

Whenever there is conversation about people and the environment it seems to fall into two categories: what people as individuals can do and what people in groups, such as companies, can do. We can talk about a little of both here.

First, a shout out to some Pilates companies that are stepping up their eco-presence. Balanced Body is number one on my list. For the third year in a row they have won a WRAP, a California waste reduction award for outstanding efforts in recycling. Also, the Balanced Body campus is 40 percent solar and they maintain a number of other green initiatives as well.

Gaiam, is another company that provides Pilates products such as DVDs and clothing that has a decidedly green commitment. They emphasize fair trade and sustainably made products, carbon neutral shipping and zero waste work environment. Other environmentally conscious Pilates companies include Peak Pilates with its line of sustainable bamboo Pilates equipment, and Fletcher Pilates setting an example by going completely paperless.

Clearly supporting ecologically progressive companies is one of the ways individuals can make a difference for the environment, but it also comes down to lot of the little choices we make in our daily lives as well.
Here are 5 green ideas you can make part of your wellness program:

1) Recycle then forget the plastic water bottle! Get a reusable water bottle.

2) Your next Pilates or yoga mat could be made from earth friendly materials.

3) The workout clothing you choose can support organic, fair trade practices or even be made from recycled materials. Hyde Yoga, Beckons and be present all offer eco-conscious workout clothes.

4) Walk, bike, ride share or take public transport to the studio or gym.

5) Put more organic, local and sustainably harvested foods in your diet.
