Intermediate Pilates Workout

(c)Alisa Wyatt

Alisa Wyatt's Intermediate Pilates Workout DVD, like her Advanced Workout DVD, is a straight-forward classical Pilates mat workout. So far, Alisa's DVDs tend to move right through their routines without a lot of extras like props or chatting. I like that, and I find these kinds of Pilates DVDs most convenient to use on a regular basis.

Though not as power-paced as her Advanced Pilates Workout, the Intermediate Workout moves along with clear instructions and well-placed cues. There is an almost continuous stream of verbal info. to take in as you are moving. This is not unusual in Pilates classes, but if you are not used to it you might find it a little nerve-wracking. Some strain creeps into Alisa's voice at times as well, though overall the energy is light and up-beat. The best policy is to just relax with it and let what you don't get go by. You'll get it next time.

Alisa starts introducing the transitions between the exercises in this DVD. I am appreciative of that. At the intermediate level it is time to start making the connections between the exercises part of the workout.

This DVD is solidly intermediate, maybe high intermediate as DVDs go. I think you should have some Pilates mat experience to get the most out of it. However, Alisa does begin with a review of some important basics like the Pilates powerhouse, safety tips, and the idea of oppositional stretch. She also does do a good job of building up most of the challenging exercises, starting with a slightly less difficult versions and then offering the challenge version. But less difficult is not beginner. Be forewarned: There is an ab work sequence that goes on and on with the upper torso in flexion. This ab set is standard in many Pilates classes, but be realistic about where you are with it. You can and should put your head down if you are losing your form. Take a rest and come up again. Besides, you are going to need to save energy for a particularly grueling set of neck pulls later on.

So, another strong, flowing, no-frills workout from Alisa Wyatt. Well, one frill: Alisa is working out on the sand by the ocean while I'm home on the floor. What's up with that? I'm kidding. While I don't really need ocean views for my DVDs, it's a nice touch(for Alisa, that is!). Actually, Alisa demonstrates most exercises beautifully and I think you will get a lot out of taking time from your workout to actually watch her, and the ocean.
