How Pilates Helped Me
I started Pilates classes many years ago because I was a dancer and movement therapist, and people were talking about Pilates. But very soon I fell in love with Pilates for how it strong and supported through the core it made me feel. Now I feel great in my body. My posture is excellent and I can do just about anything I want. I am often surprised at how many dance moves I can still pull off after all these years away. It's because of Pilates. A a matter of fact, my arabesque is better, and more stable, than it used to be.
How I Did My Training
I started with classes and private sessions. Eventually I got some certifications and started teaching. Then there was a long period of time where I lived and taught in an area that had no other Pilates people. So I got more into DVDs. I actually did a lot of Stott Pilates DVDs during that time. And I had a portable reformer from Balanced Body that was built like a tank
Now I take class twice a week. I do one class that is exclusively reformer, and another class that changes depending on what people want to do. I also do a lot of Pilates at home. I have various pieces of equipment at home, and sometimes I enjoy DVDs - I have a huge collection from lots of people.
I also learn a lot from the internet.
What I'd Do Differently
- I'd go faster. I kept myself stuck in some classes that were not really moving me along for quite a while. Then I got feisty and signed up for some classes I thought might be too hard for me ( I asked first). They weren't, and I haven't regretted it.
