pilates for back pain

i have suffered for years with a thoracic disk herniation. surgery would have been through the chest. I had tried everything, chiropractor, physical therapy, exercises, and medications without relief. In January 2010, I bought a pilates rebounder machine from overstock.com (great service). I have been doing pilates using the videos that came with it regularly 3-4 times per week. My back pain is 95% gone. I love it. It is relaxing and everyone has asked me what I have been doing. It lengthens and strengthens your muscles. I even helped a friend of mine move over the weekend and was not sore. QVC also sells a machine with the tapes.

lower back pain relieved

I had a horrible back issue. I was a cheerleader in college and while doing a stunt suffered a severe back injury that just got worse over the years. At first my back went out every 5 years but that escalated. By the time I was 35 I had tried all the treatments. Electronic stimulation, therapy, cortisone injections, ok just say it..massive drugs...in many different combinations never over the doctor's limits. My first (and favorite) neuronsurgeon's suggestion was pilates. It kept surgery at bay for 3 years. After a total disc replacement, (prodisc) my new surgeon ( awesome) also suggested pilates for rehab. It is 6 years later and I have taught pilates for the past 5. It works. ( I now also teach bodypump and bodyflow) I did have great surgery, but still, wow, pilates saved me. I have a great story for my students. It makes them truly believe it can help. AND IT DOES!!! I teach mat with props and truly love what I do!!!!

Unbelieveable

I was not looking for a pain reliever but for about 2 years I was waking up every morning with pain in my lower left tailbone area just a naggging all day long pain. I thought I had something really wrong with me. So in the fall I started a Pilates class 2 days a week and it has been at least 3 months now and I have not felt that pain at all and the only thing I have done different is to start the Pilates class so I am giving the Pilates the kudos. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who has any kind of back issues. It was not easy at first because my back issue was there and it was a lot of ouches a long the way but, I hung in there doing the best I could in the beginning and now I am only doing (2)mat classes but I am getting ready to start a ball class with the two mat classes. Love It!!!! I am a Pilates Addict and still just learning how to do a lot of these exercises properly. So I am still taking small step with the program. But it does work...

After a hysterectomy I was unable to excercise or continue pilates for too long, I began having chronic lower back pain and upon starting slowly back into pilates my back pain has been relieved tremendously. I have slight scholeosis and has been like a miracle in strengthing my back and taking the pain away.

Pilates Helped My Low Back Pain

I used to have a lot of pain in my low back. I was very sway backed. My chiropractor told me to try pilates and it has helped so much over the years. I love it. I now have a much more normal posture with my back lengthening and my stomach muscles pulling in instead of hanging out. If you have low back pain it might be because of weak stomach muscles letting our back get tight. I think Pilates is great for the back.

Pilates was crucial for my back

Pilates was perhaps the single most helpful think I did for my back when I was in serious trouble with it. Of course, I needed a watered down version of it because my sacroiliac kept falling apart on me. But with Pilates as therapy, I got rid of most of my pain and for the 1st time in my adult life developed stable body posture. Since that time, I have learned the role that other excellent systems such as Feldenkrais, Thomas Hanna Somatics, Ideokinesis, Laban and others can play along with Pilates to keep my back out of trouble.
