I'm still on my fall is a time for balance theme, and no exercise could be more appropriate for that than open leg balance. It is a beginner exercise, often used as a prep for open leg rocker, but if one takes the time to really find one's shape and balance here, there is much to be gained.
Pilates beginner or not, it takes strength, lots of control, and flexibility to do open leg balance. This exercise has a deep scoop of the abdominals in it and a real emphasis on length along the back of the body and along the backs of the legs, with an open chest and perfect, centered form.
Open leg balance is also very good training for more advanced Pilates mat exercises such as teaser and boomerang because you don't hold your legs up with your hands, you hold them up with your belly, which is the strength and skill you need when whoosh, you don't get to use hands.
