This racerback workout tank top is from Abi and Joseph, a Pilates and yoga clothing company based in Australia. If you need a lot of structure and support in a workout top this tank might not be for you, but if you can go with a nice line and comfort in a simple, quality piece, read on. I'll tell you why I like this workout top as much for what it doesn't have as for what it does have.
I like this tank because it is soft and smooth, without the many heavy seams and panels that dominate women's workout tops these days. The supplex and elastane mesh fabric is breathable and a nice departure from slippy/crinkly nylons, or cottons that hold sweat. While on the light side, it's not too thin and it has a quality feel. At about $73.00 U.S., this is not an inexpensive top, especially for those of us in the U.S.. I suspect, however, that it will look good a long time if cared for -- as in none of the typical abuse I subject my workout clothes to. It can be machine washed but must be line dried.
Keeping the Look
This tank also does not have a shelf bra in it. That's one of those "simple elegance" features that I like in this case, but it does mean that if you want something under it, as most will, you will need a racerback bra or sports bra. Abi and Joseph makes a nice racerback sports bra (fig.2). It's lycra with removable pads, and definitely not as subtle as the tank. It has vertical seams on each cup and it does come in a choice of bright colors. Despite the seam it is not highly structured, If you need a lot of support this isn't it, but it should be enough support for many women. If you like to wear workout bras alone you could do that with this one. I tried it under the racerback tank. The seam shows a little through the smoothness of the tank and the bright color peeks out now and then -- which can be fun depending on the look you are after.
Racerback Workout Top Style
Racerback workout top styling is popular because it very functional sports-wise. Racerback is cool, and the open shoulders make room for full movement. Some of us also like racerbacks because visually, the open shoulders help balance a larger waist or hips. I like the simple lines of this top and I think the racerback is athletic looking. By the way, this racerback is also definitely long enough. It hugs the body but it isn't elastic tight. Available xs - xl. Graphite grey only.
Overall, I think this top hits the mark on comfort, simple stylishness, and functionality; which is what I like in Abi and Joseph workout clothing in general.
